Mathematical modeling of support distribution under the foot
Publication/Presentation Date

Abstract
A mathematical model is developed and analyzed to determine the distribution of support under the foot. Because the foot is a statically indeterminant structure, this distribution can be found only through consideration of the deformation of the foot under load. Such deformation occurs as a result of relative movement of rigid segments of the foot about known rotation axes. We analyze the deformation of the foot under applied load, and use the result to derive a system of equations from which the unknown support forces can be determined. The effect of compression of the heel and metatarsal heads into the shoe sole and foot pad is included in the analysis.
