Adult Celiac Disease: Recognition and Diagnosis for the Primary Care Provider.

Publication/Presentation Date

Abstract

Celiac disease is an immune-mediated enteropathy in response to dietary gluten causing malabsorption and a multitude of systemic changes. Although referral to a gastroenterologist is recommended, a primary care physician plays a crucial role in the recognition, diagnosis, and management of this condition. Systemic manifestations outside of the traditionally recognized gastrointestinal signs should prompt a primary care physician to begin the initial work up of this common gastrointestinal disease.
